The NASA International Space Apps Challenge is the largest global hackathon on Earth, for scientists, coders, designers, technologists and storytellers, amongst others. Participants from around the world come together over a 48 hour period to solve challenges (around 25 to choose from) submitted by NASA or the Met Office, which can be as diverse as: creating a video about climate change facts (and/or experiences in your area); using open source Earth data applications and augmenting these with other valuable data/analysis/features; simulating a space biology superhero to help understand space travel stresses; moonquake map app development of seismic data transmitted back from the moon. More information about the challenges can be found here: https://2022.spaceappschallenge.org/challenges/
Participants range from multinational companies, government organisations and space agencies, small to medium businesses, through to university students and the wider general public. Last year 28,000 people, spanning 162 countries and territories took part. Global winners get invited by NASA to visit a rocket launch.
We will also be running 3 x 2-hour bootcamps on Met Office data, tooling and data analytics from 27th – 29th September for those wishing for additional preparation and support.
