EI Conference 2021 – Registrations are now open
The JCEEI have successfully applied for funding from the Office for Students’ (OfS) . The funding will provide scholarships as part of their nationwide drive to expand access to the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence sector for women, students of colour, those with disabilities and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in the UK.
The Met Office is playing host to NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge, with participants from all walks of life invited to take part.

Professor Hywel Williams has been appointed as the University of Exeter’s new Co-Director of the pioneering Joint Centre for Excellence in Environmental Intelligence (JCEEI).
Hosted by The Alan Turing Institute, AI UK 2023 will be an in-depth exploration of how data science and AI can be used to solve real-world challenges. Our diverse programme will be thematically structured around the UK Government’s Office for Science and Technology Strategy’s priorities, with a broad range of interactive content, expect to hear the latest thinking on digital twins, algorithmic bias and AI ethics.
The JCEEI and the University of Exeter are currently recruiting for two new senior positions: Co-Director for the JCEEI and Professor in Environmental Intelligence.
The JCEEI hosted NASA Space Apps 2022, the largest annual global hackathon in the world. This year’s event theme was ‘Make SPACE’, celebrating that ‘there’s always space for one more’, to eliminate barriers of access to space and science opportunities.
The Met Office is hosting the NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2022 and you are invited. The event takes place on the 1st and 2nd of October 2022 at the Met Office in Exeter, and is sponsored by the Joint Centre for Excellence in Environmental Intelligence, and TechExeter CIC.
In recognition of the huge potential for data science and artificial intelligence to drive forward new advances in weather and climate science, the Met Office Data Science Framework has been published. Capability in data science within the Met Office has been growing over the last few years, with a vibrant community of practice, including the Joint Centre for Excellence in Environmental Intelligence. The Framework sets out how the Met Office will take the next step forward to help realise the potential of a new frontier in machine learning and artificial intelligence for weather and climate science and services.
The Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Exeter extends their thanks to those who could attend the IDSAI Day of Ideas at Exeter Castle on Tuesday where they showcased some of their interdisciplinary data science and AI research from across the University and work with partners and collaborators.

On the 24th May, the World Economic Forum in Davos will be hosting a University of Exeter and Arctic Base Camp collaborative event on how business leaders can access scientific data to address the global risks from climate change.
Last month, AI UK 2022 was broadcast live around the world to 1700 attendees from 53 countries. It was the Turing’s largest-ever event with over 200 leading figures in AI delivering 50 sessions and 11 interactive ‘Research in action’ workshops.
THE JCEEI will be an integral part of the newly announced ‘Renewing biodiversity through a people-in-nature approach’ (RENEW) project funded by NERC. RENEW will work with landowners, businesses, and communities to restore woodlands, wetlands and farmland across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The Joint Centre of Excellence in Environmental Intelligence (JCEEI) hosted the second annual conference on December 16th and 17th 2021, which was themed ‘Beyond COP26: The Road to Net Zero’.
