Based in Exeter, the Joint Centre is pioneering the use of Environmental Intelligence to provide meaningful insight needed to inform decision-making and improve risk management, leading us towards a sustainable interaction with the natural environment and delivery of Net Zero.

The Joint Centre for Excellence in Environmental Intelligence brings together world-leading researchers from the University of Exeter and the Met Office, to pioneer the development of Environmental Intelligence research and deliver innovative, interdisciplinary education and training.

Environmental Intelligence is a new field of knowledge that exploits the explosion in Environmental data and the rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence to create solutions to some of the most important challenges facing society today. The ability to integrate data and information from multiple, inter-related, sources provides a step-change in our understanding of the complex interactions between the environment, climate, natural ecosystems, human social and economic systems, and health.

Working at the interface of environmental and sustainability research, data science, artificial intelligence and digital technologies, the Joint Centre is focused on applied research and collaboration. Our activities are organised in two programmes: “Research to Applications” and “Capability Building and Skills Development”. We also conduct outreach and engagement events for a wide variety of audiences.

Research Development & Application – Utilising the power of data to transform our understanding of a changing environment and find solutions to the challenges that this presents.

Infrastructure and Data Engineering Research – Building on the expertise and staff at the Met Office Informatics Lab, and in partnership with private sector providers, the Joint Centre will lead the development of scalable cloud infrastructure for Environmental Intelligence

Capability Building and Skills Development - Building capacity and skills for researchers, policy makers and industry, and support a new generation of multi-disciplinary researchers and decision-makers.
